The STAHLWERK MIG/MAG-160 M is a compact, versatile inverter for anyone looking for a lightweight but fully-fledged wire welding machine with additional functions. Weighing only 6.8 kg and a welding current range of 20-160 A, the device covers MIG/MAG inert gas welding, FLUX cored wire welding, MMA/MMA and DC-Lift-TIG - all on a normal 230 V socket. Modern IGBT technology ensures a stable arc, high efficiency and robust performance in daily use. In MIG/MAG and FLUX operation, the MIG/MAG-160 M processes wires in the common diameters of 0.6 / 0.8 / 1.0 mm and 0.9 mm (cored wire). Standard 1 kg wire rolls can be processed here. The bobbin mandrel can hold 16 mm bobbins. The wire speed automatically adapts to the set welding current - this creates an even penetration with stable arc guidance. The device can easily be reversed for cored wire welding without gas. In addition to wire welding, the device can handle classic MMA/MAC welding with coated stick electrodes. Hotstart makes ignition easier, Anti-Stick reduces the current in the event of a short circuit so that the electrode does not burn out and can be removed from the workpiece more easily. In combination with an optional WP-17V Lift TIG torch, the MIG/MAG-160 M can also be used as a DC TIG device with contact ignition - ideal for finer, clean seams on steel and stainless steel. It is operated via a clear front panel with a digital display, selection of welding processes and choice of wire diameter. An integrated overheating protection with control LED as well as the intelligent smart cooling with a powerful fan protect the electronics and enable a practical duty cycle of up to 60% at 80 A and 100% at 62 A (at 40 °C ambient temperature). The robust ST-Guard housing makes the device resistant to everyday workshop use and transport.

Functions

  • MIG/MAG inert gas welding (GMAW): MIG with inert gas (e.g. argon) and MAG with active gas (e.g. CO₂ or mixed gas) for unalloyed and low-alloy steels; Wire and gas come out of the torch together, ideal for productive work with just one hand.
  • FLUX/cored wire welding without gas (FCAW): MIG/MAG-like process with a special cored wire electrode in which the flux core provides gas protection - ideal for outdoor work and drafts.
  • MMA/MAC welding (ARC): Manual electrode welding with direct current (20-160 A) for robust repair and assembly work, even in hard-to-reach places. Can be used universally indoors and outdoors, even in windy conditions and on construction sites.
  • DC-Lift-TIG welding (TIG with contact ignition): Lift-TIG mode with optional WP-17V torch: Ignition by briefly brushing the tungsten electrode, quiet DC arc for clean, controlled seams on steel and stainless steel.
  • Fully synergic device: The wire feed speed automatically adapts to the set welding current and voltage. The wire is conveyed from the reel through the hose package to the contact tip. The automatic adjustment of the welding current reduces operating errors and creates uniform seams.
  • Hotstart and Anti-Stick: Hotstart briefly increases the voltage for better ignition, Anti-Stick reduces the current in the event of a short circuit so that the electrode does not burn out and can be easily removed.
  • Electronic safety control: Modern IGBT inverter technology, overheating protection with control LED, smart cooling via powerful fan and ergonomic ST-Guard housing with easily accessible control panel ensure safe and efficient work.

Properties & advantages

  • Versatile 5-in-1 professional for workshops and assembly: One device for MIG/MAG, FLUX, MMA and Lift-TIG - ideal when there is little space in the workshop or service vehicle but different processes are required.
  • High mobility, low weight: With only approx. 6.8 kg and compact dimensions of 400 × 155 × 290 mm, the device is easy to transport and can be used flexibly at different work locations.
  • Optimum duty cycle: 15% duty cycle at 160 A, 60% at 80 A and 100% at 62 A (MIG/MAG/TIG/MMA, 40 °C) enable both short, powerful seams in the upper current range and longer welding jobs in the medium power range.
  • Clean results with inert gas or cored wire: MIG/MAG with inert gas delivers smooth, low-spatter seams, while FLUX cored wire does not require an external gas bottle - particularly practical outdoors and for mobile use.
  • Robust ST-Guard housing and smart cooling: The ergonomic housing protects the electronics, ventilation openings and fans ensure effective cooling and enable the maximum duty cycle to be used.
  • Easy handling thanks to the digital display: Clearly structured front with process and wire thickness selection, digital current/voltage display and switching function make it easy to quickly adjust the parameters. Settings can be made quickly, which saves time, especially when switching between processes (e.g. MIG and MMA) frequently.
  • Wire roll - Commercially available 1 kg wire rolls can be processed here. The bobbin mandrel can hold 16 mm bobbins.
  • Wire drive roller - by simply changing the drive roller, different wire thicknesses can be used (0.6 mm / 0.8 mm / 1.0 mm).
  • MMA electrode welding / MMA welding - is a universal welding process. No protective gas is required.
  • Lift TIG - With a separately available hose package (not included in delivery), the device can also be used for DC TIG welding (string ignition).

Note: The device is not intended for use in residential areas where power is supplied from a public low-voltage power supply system. It may be difficult to ensure electromagnetic compatibility in these areas due to both conducted and radiated interference.
